Swooning for Swami

You’ve got to wonder about a guy’s intentions when he shows up carrying his own mattress.

I was in the courtyard of a guesthouse in Haridwar, a holy Hindu city north of Delhi, waiting for the yoga master who was to be my guide. I was here to cover the yoga festival that reportedly happened every February on the banks of the Ganges in nearby Rishikesh.  The guide was to help me navigate the crowds and arrange interviews with the workshop participants. 

Mr. A. was not what I expected. With his long dark hair tied in a pony-tail and a weather beaten brown leather jacket atop a tunic and pyjami, he bore a striking resemblance to actor Stephen Segal - in his pre-mumu phase. Under his arm was a white yoga mat that looked as though it had been rescued from the floor of a crack house. Still, there’s something faintly suggestive about a white cotton mattress no matter how filthy it is. Back to Books
